NFL2K5 vids, proof that Madden Wii can look at least this good

Hey Freezetime,
It seems like you're really fixated and hung up on the visuals of 2k5. I think that in many ways the game still holds up well against the competition, as well. It was one of the football games that got a lot of playtime in my Xbox back in 05. It definitely isn't something we'd want to copy. That's just not the game we're making on this platform.
In 2009/2010, I'm more excited about the visual direction we've taken Madden Wii and absolutely feel that the graphics hold up on their own merit. The animations on Madden 10 are fantastic and the characters are targeting a very wide audience, one that isn't just the sim crowd.
Our art director didn't set out to match or exceed any football game out there, past or present. His goal and the goal of all the artists involved was to set out in an entirely new direction, something that took the over the top football you see on the field each and every Sunday in the NFL...and maximize the strength of the Wii in a way that appealed to all types of gamers.
Example...
--in our game world arm sweat and ultra-realistic shoelaces do not make sense.
--screen-shaking big hits on a QB drifting out of the pocket by a menacing linebacker cheating on a QB SPY makes sense.
--on-the-fly Call Your Shots where you can point and drag your recievers in a visual pre-play route system makes sense.
--cameras that get up close and personal, in the huddle and in the action, down in the trenches, showing you the MASSIVE difference between a 350 pound down lineman and a 200 pound wide out trying to block coming out of an in-motion route makes sense.
--characters that look the part, big and small, fast and lanky, heroic and poised, specific for each position and readable from the snap, makes sense.
THAT is what our game is all about. It's different...and it's 100% intentional.
I just think that what you're looking for, you already have. Someone already made NFL2k5.
We're trying to make something different, something Wii owners can play, enjoy, and be proud of regardless as to whether they are a hardcore junkie who plays in an online Madden Wii league or a guy who plays with his buddies for 30 minutes before going out, or the Dad and Son who both love football but don't know the difference between a 4-3 and a 3-4, but still want to have fun playing Madden.
All of us feel that this is the game you will love from the moment you pick it up, and that includes the visuals. There will be more videos soon, and you'll have more to judge, love, and of course criticize, and it will be entirely different than any other football game made, and to us, the game team, that has been playing it for the past year....that's a VERY VERY good thing.
|||I appreciate the response GAMMABOMB but again, this is the 4th Madden on Wii. You are honestly telling me you meant to alienate hardcore Madden players but making the game not look as good as it can and not as good as NFL2K5? Why? The casual market on Wii does not care about football enough to care about every new Madden game. If they want football, they turn to Backyard football. Why didn't Madden 07, 08 and 09 look as good as NFL2K5? Why were you porting them from PS2? Wii is a more powerful system.
You mentioned that NFL2K5 has already been done before so why are the 360 and PS3 versions looking better and better every year? Why do they push the visual limit while Wii gets PS2 ports? This new visual look for 2010 is just another way of telling us that the "serious" Madden game is on the 360 and PS3 while Wii is for kids or older casuals even though the controls are better for Wii. It's really sad this is the case. I know you can make Madden Wii look really realistic and better than 2K5. It's already been brought up. The fact that you have ported Madden from PS2 for 3 years is really lazy on your part and now 2010 isn't even for hardcore Madden players. You've essentially told us to buy Madden for those other systems cuz you want 6 year olds and 45 year old casuals playing it for Wii. Thanks
|||Well for what it's worth, i've only being playing Madden since 08 on the Wii. The graphics weren't great but were functional. Then I got 09, hoping that there'd be some improvements and fixes with franchise mode since that's the only mode I play, and that if the graphics improved at all it would be a bonus.... unfortunately franchise mode wasn't improved at all in 09 (same problems still there), and the graphics got worse (no rain effect, plain green field). There was only one or two nice things added in 09 (call your shot, on field play calling) for franchise players.
Now to see the new "art direction"... well it's a bit disappointing to see players turned into cartoon characters to say the least.

showing you the MASSIVE difference between a 350 pound down lineman and a 200 pound wide out trying to block coming out of an in-motion route makes sense.

I don't understand the fixation with being able to visually tell the difference between a lineman and a wideout, since when has this been a problem? Pre snap - the lineman is the guy on the line and the wideout is the guy in motion... post snap the WR has an icon above his head so you can pass to him and the lino doesn't, pretty obvious no? Why is this an issue for the Wii only... if you're target market is kids, then just come out and say it (then at least the art direction makes sense), rather than try and justify cartoon characters with this logic.
The unfortunate part is, the controls on the Wii are so much fun for Madden that the fact that the graphics aren't up to PS3 or whatever standards is no big deal. Gimme Wii controls over the fancy graphics any day, I can live with 09 graphics but I don't think I can handle those cartoon characters

I don't think it's marketing the art style to kids - it's creating an entirely new experience that sets itself apart from the 360/PS3 games and makes sense on the Wii, the platform for EVERY gamer.
As far as not knowing why you need to tell the body types apart, I think it's important to show the body types being significantly different because in the NFL...the difference between a free safety and a center is SIGNIFICANTLY DIFFERENT.

Again, you haven't stated why you've been porting Madden from PS2 since 07 and why you haven' gotten graphics on par or better than 2K5. KIDS like cartoon graphics. If you want to make cartoon graphics, make a separate Madden for that crowd and a REALISTIC looking one for the rest of us. This board and serious Madden fans PREFER REALISTIC graphics over cartoon ones yet you only make those for 360/PS3. The writing is on the wall.|||every gamer what is that crap you have been listening to to many marketing people
every gamer is not going to play this game and I am very sad that EA is trying to make it so EVERY GAMER WANTS TO
I know you want to sell as many copies as you can but if you are targeting young kids it wont work
I have 7 boys under the age of 8 on my block whenever they come over to play the WII Madden is not on the list of games they want
they do not understand footbal enough to enjoy the game
if you make it so they can enjoy the game then I wont
you are turning off your long time customers (I have Madden 05 06 07 08 for the PC) and would have bought 09 and 10 for the PC but I dont think I am going to buy 10 inless I here EA say this game is as hardcore as the older PC titles|||Thanks for your comments Gammabomb.

I'd argue that the Wii controls are what really sets it apart (from 360/PS3).

Football games seemed to have managed pretty well up to now without the gross exaggeration of this difference. The issue isn't so much with the diference between players, it's that the individuals on their own look like cartoon characters... they have toothpicks for legs
I tend to agree with Freeze/bean here, if you want to widen the market on the Wii, leave Madden for the serious folks who buy it year after year, and create "playground football" for the younger/casual market.. then you can go to town with all the big head/cartoon/all play action.
Appreciate you dropping by to read all this stuff.|||am i the only one graphics here who appreciates this game obviously the wii cant put out ps360 and instead of making a half-a$$ed game they went a completly different direction while trying to appeal to everyone. if you dont want to buy this game because of the way it looks that is fine and im sure its fine with everyone else but other than that quit your complaining and just calm yourself. EA has done a great job with this game and the way it looks is different but why does different have to be bad. so just leave the developers alone take your microsoft fanboy self else where|||

I think everyone will come around.
The ones who can't afford a ps3 or xbox 360 might be the ones complaining.
I am not sure.
If this isn't real enough, get a ps360.
I agree with you, a banner day for EA.
Just think, THIS is JUST the beginning.|||tommy
I can afford a ps3/xbox but why? I already have a WII and an alienware LC'd gaming PC
why would I spend money on a piece of equiptment to play one game?
I would not be complaining about the WII Version being hardcore enough, if EA would release the Madden 10 for the PC which is what I play all my other titles on.
Ea is not releasing it for the PC so the WII is what I have to play madden on
I have been playing this game for years and it has never been perfect, ok maybe 05 for the PC was close, and will be the first to come on these boards and say I am sorry if wii 10 is better than the other versions
I am feeling let down by EA I am not a causal gamer and dont want to play games focused on that market
EA could have gone many different routes with Madden however they chose to try to split the middle
1 release Madden 10 ALL Play for kids and release a str8 Madden 10 with all the same features as the PS3 xbox for us
2 release it for the PC and I will stop posting here
3 talk str8 about who this game is built for if it is not made with us in mind then say so
|||here is a question i want you all to think about nice and hard. what is a casual gamer? are hard core gamers players who constantly love blowing things up. hard core gamer is a term we are seeing more and more since the release of the ps360. so i ask what are they, they both are playing games for fun.|||Just look a the differences between Madden Wii and the PS3/360 and you will know what we are going on about. One is CLEARLY aimed for serious Madden players.|||

I'll go ahead and finish your sentence for you, and kind of end my contribution to this discussion (on my part, since I feel like I'm repeating myself, and we still have tons of other cool things to share and discuss).
One is CLEARLY aimed for 360/PS3 Madden players..and one is trying to reach All types of Madden players.
With that, you are more than welcome to post about NFL2k5, 360 graphics, Tecmo Super Bowl, etc, and the rest of us can focus on Madden NFL 10 for Wii and use the next two months to finish making what we believe will be the best Madden on Wii yet.
|||^^^There you have it folks. Proof from the dev that if you want serious football, you need to look elsewhere.
Oh and btw, you never answered why you've just been porting the PS2 Madden to Wii until this year. 3 years of straight ports.
